Meldonium is mainly used to treat heart conditions but also has an array of useful pharmaceutical applications. Created initially to increase the capacity of the body to carry oxygen and help with cardiac health issues such as angina, heart attack, and heart failure, published studies have also found it to be effective in treating strokes, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease, and can help in improving people’s moods. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of carnitine, a nutrient involved in fat metabolism, and allowing the body to produce more energy for a given amount of oxygen by burning glucose instead of fat. For this reason, it has also found a use in the military as an endurance-booster for high altitude activity, where the low levels of oxygen in the air can make physical activity much harder.
Meldonium is usually sold in 250-mg and 500-mg capsules. It can be taken with meals and with a sufficient amount of water.
Dosage is highly dependent upon the individual and a doctor should be consulted before taking meldonium.
Generally administered dosage in adults:
Dosage should be lowered for elderly patients and patients with moderate renal and/or hepatic insufficiency.
Side effects of taking meldonium are rare and mild, but the following can occur: increased heart-rate (tachycardia), indigestion, agitation, anxiety, dizziness, and sleep disorder.
It is not recommended for use by any patients under the age of 18 years, pregnant or nursing women, and individuals with severe and/or hepatic failure.
