Idebenone

Idebenone is a synthesized nootropic that shares similarities with the antioxidant ubiquinone (Coenzyme Q-10). The antioxidant properties of idebenone assist a variety of cells from suffering oxidative stress. It is prescribed to patients suffering a range of illnesses such as liver disease and heart disease. There is also some evidence to suggest that idebenone may help with slowing the decline of thinking skills in patients suffering from moderate to severe Alzheimer’s.

Idebenone is sold in 30-milligram, 45-milligram, 90-milligram, 120-milligram, and 150-milligram tablets that are administered orally. The reason for the varying strengths is due to the dosage requirements in adults in children.

Administered dosage in adults:

  • Alzheimer’s disease: between 90 and 120-milligrams (three times a day)
  • Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy: 300-milligrams (three times a day)

Administered dosage in children:

  • Duchenne muscular dystrophy: 900-milligrams daily (for one year in patients ≥10 years old)
  • Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy: 300-milligrams three times a day.

Side effects of taking idebenone are very uncommon but may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loose stool.

Patients that are suffering from moderate to severe forms of hepatic and renal impairments should refrain from taking idebenone.
